Balustraat

Following the Spring Festival at Maison Florida, an artist-run space, we were searching for a way to make the entrance more accessible, since it is hidden behind a fence and a gate.

How can this fence provide a welcoming feeling?

A fence usually serves to separate one place from another, to show a boarder between public space and a private area.
The idea arose to transform the fence into a space of connection. As a result we built four table settings, made from waste wood which we gathered from the company across the street. This way the table settings were a result of the connection between the artist-run space and the company across the street. By making these installations on the fence, they are accessible from both sides. We invited the company to come and sit with us after their working day to enjoy the Spring Festival.

By creating a platform on top of the fence, it no longer separates us from the street, but now serves as a place to hang out and say hello to passengers.

This lower setting is both a table, bench and staircase to easily get from one side to the other.

The table runs through the fence. With the sliding system you can choose how much table surface your neighbor receives and at the same time you determine the distance between you and the person next to you.

Without a neighbor on the other side of the fence, you can't sit at this table. It’s important that you start to find your balance together on the benches because it has the effect of a seesaw.
