“She always wants to taste a slice.”
Elke Cuppens graduated as a product designer and educator but can mostly be found in the kitchen, experimenting with new flavors and bringing people together. She is also the illustrator and mastermind behind the drawings within the Nomad City branding.
Years ago she was dreaming of a tiny house, a small space to collect some stuff and materials, while the outside world would be her home. Because of the atelier space ‘Maison Florida’, originated by The School vzw, her dreams became reality. She found herself a new group of friends with the most beautiful ideas and the biggest energy you can imagine. Here she first rebuilded a small caravan and after two years she felt ready to tear that one down and build a new wooden cabin on top of that trailer. Now called her 750 kg House. She’s working on an illustrated guide on how to build one yourself (and how to make it even better).
Now she’s living in Nomad City, where she really enjoys every season and all the challenges that living off the grid has to offer. Her urge of bringing people together and building environments and objects can easily be tempered by all the challenges that this communal and self-sustaining way of living has to offer.
She mostly works with wood, food and textile. These materials are really versatile and can be easily found in their natural state, grown and harvested on the surface of the earth. She’s using these materials in a playful way while bringing a subtile message of the dependence of our environment.
